Listen in on the Podcast episode that covers this post in detail…
I’ve been doing the workout MURPH every Memorial Day for the past 7 years.
It’s a brutal workout with lots of volume that’ll punish the body.
1 Mile Run
100 Pull Ups
200 Push Ups
300 Squats
1 Mile Run
All in a 20# weight vest.
It’s all for a great purpose…
To pay honor and respect to a fallen hero of war, Michael P Murphy.
Not only to him but to ALL of the fallen soldiers of war.
They all paid the ultimate price.
Going through an intense workout such as MURPH to experience pain for them is the least we can do.
The pain you experience in MURPH is NOTHING compared to what they had to endure.
But, it’s better than nothing and to me, it means a great deal to be able to pay homage to fallen soldiers of war somehow, someway.
To me, there are 3 BIG LESSONS a workout like MURPH can teach you about life.
#1 – Stand for Something
MURPH and others like him all stood for something greater than themselves — FREEDOM
They stood for it so much they gave their lives to uphold and protect it.
In life, you need to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.
Adopt and LIVE by CODES
Codes like:
-Living with INTEGRITY
-To NEVER QUIT
-To Take MASSIVE ACTION
-To Take and Have 110% OWNERSHIP…
Having CODES in life will mold WHO you are and help create and guide the actions you take.
#2 – NEVER OUT OF THE FIGHT
As the story goes, MURPH fought tooth and nail until his very last breath.
He NEVER took himself out of the fight until it wasn’t his decision to make.
In life, you’re NEVER out of the fight either.
You’re NEVER out of the fight until you actually make the decision to be or life ends.
Therefore, QUITTING should never be an option within your mind.
QUITTING is on YOU.
To fight on is on YOU.
NEVER let yourself out of the fight.
NEVER QUIT.
#3 – Stay On The Grind And Chip Away
The VOLUME the workout MUPRH has can be intimidating.
To finish, you must stay on the grind and keep “chipping away” at the reps.
What always helps me push through a grinding workout such as this is to take it 1 rep or 1 step at a time.
Focus in on small wins via small sets.
You just keep grinding until the workout’s done.
Same can be said about life.
Take it one day at a time.
One second at a time.
Keep chipping away.
Keep grinding.
